What is the LPE Spanish Program?

LPE Spanish is a volunteer-based program that brings Spanish to the classroom of every child at Lake Pointe Elementary. It is thanks to the work and dedication of our volunteers, both of the past and present, that we are able to offer Spanish to over 500 students this year! Although it is operated by and the classes are taught by volunteers, we are very fortunate to receive the support of our principal, Heidi Gudelman, and the LPE faculty and staff without which this program would not be possible.

The volunteer-based Spanish program was put into effect by Lake Travis I.S.D. in 2003. It gave every elementary in the school district the opportunity to offer Spanish as part of the curriculum of the lower grade levels. It also provided these schools with training and teaching materials for the volunteer teachers. The LPE Spanish program has been successful and has grown every year to where we now include all grade levels! Our ability to offer this volunteer-based program is a testament to how important the incorporation of a second language to the curriculum is to our LPE community. We all recognize the developmental benefits of learning a second language, that the best time for a person to learn a second language is as a child, and that by offering our children this opportunity we are possibly opening doors for their future.

Our Spanish classes are for 30 minutes once per week from October to May. We incorporate songs and games in our lessons so the children are not only learning something new, but having fun doing it. They are so eager to learn and share what they know. It is their enthusiasm and appreciation that keeps our volunteers coming back!

Why participate?

Teaching Spanish is an extremely rewarding volunteer effort. It's an opportunity to make a direct and lasting impact on the children's lives and a great way to brush up on and expand your Spanish skills. It also affords parents the rare opportunity to be in their child's classroom on a weekly basis and to get to know their child's friends. The children will love you being there and will keep asking you to come back! Volunteer Flyer
