LPE Spanish Curriculum
Grades K-5th
Fall 2009
In this
document, you will find the Spanish curriculum by grade level. There will be focus material, review material
(except for kinder), enrichment material (preparing them for the following
year), focus key phrases, review phrases (except for kinder), additional
enrichment that isn’t covered in our “regular” curriculum, and challenge ideas for
advanced students.
It’s common
to have a person who has never been exposed to Spanish in the same classroom as
someone who is exposed to it regularly, or even daily. The majority of our
students have participated in the LPE Spanish program and will therefore
be at least somewhat familiar with the material and phrases from the previous
grade level. For those new to the
program and because the children only have Spanish 30 minutes/week, it is very
important to go through Review Materials and Phrases regularly, in addition to
the Focus Materials and Phrases. Although
we’d like for the majority of the students to master the core material outlined
for a particular grade level, don’t get
“stuck” trying to be sure EVERYONE has mastered any particular area. Rather, offer SOMETHING NEW almost every
class (vocabulary and/or phrases), and offer LOTS OF REVIEW on various topics
almost every class. Use your judgement as to how much to do on new vs. review, and as to
how many topics to cover on any given day.
In order to
keep the more advanced students challenged, we list “additional enrichment” and
“challenge ideas” at the end of each grade level curriculum. These can be presented either to the class as
a whole or to the students who have already mastered the core material when the
others are working on an activity. Advanced and bilingual children can also be
given a simple Spanish book to enjoy during review; there are many available in
our Spanish room. During regular
activities, you can ask advanced students to focus on the spelling or phrasing
to help keep them learning something new.
For consistency within the grade level and for the
following year, it is important that each class within the grade level follow
the curriculum and use the materials provided by Risas
y Sonrisas (particularly the CD songs that go with
units, as well as our focus/review lists and phrases). Once the children learn a song, you may find
that they enjoy singing without the CD!
The enrichment materials are icing on the cake, and help us keep our
lessons fresh and exciting.
ABOVE
ALL ELSE, OUR GOAL IS FOR CHILDREN TO LEARN AND TO LOVE SPANISH…So, keep your
lessons moving along, and have a GREAT time with your students. Please print out this page and the curriculum
(for your grade level/s) and refer to them often!
