¡Bienvenidos!
Welcome to the Lake Pointe Elementary (LPE) Spanish Program Parent/Teacher
website. We have created this site as a means for sharing class
information, materials, and directing you to useful online tools/references.
This site is still under construction and will therefore be changing
regularly. Please refresh your pages periodically to ensure that you
have the most up to date information. We hope you find the site
useful and welcome any feedback you might have on how to improve it.
What is the LPE Spanish Program?
The LPE Spanish Program is a volunteer-based Spanish Program
that originated in 2003 with a grant from the Lake Travis Education
Foundation, giving each elementary school in the Lake Travis
Independent School District the opportunity to offer Spanish as an
enrichment program for its students. The program, which began at LPE
with kindergarten and first grade, has expanded each year and now
includes every grade level. The students participate each week in a
30 minute Spanish class from October through May. Primarily using
teaching materials from Risas y Sonrisas, our teachers incorporate
conversational Spanish and vocabulary with songs and games in their
lessons, so the children are learning Spanish while having fun. You
can visit the Risas y Sonrisas website at
www.spanishforkids.com
to see an overview of the classroom program.
The LPE Spanish program has
been successful thanks to the work and dedication of our many
volunteers, both past and present, who volunteer to teach each week
for the entire year. We are also grateful for the support of our
principal, Heidi Gudelman, and the LPE faculty and staff, without
which this program would not be possible.
It is well established that
the best time to begin learning a second language is as a child. By
offering our children this opportunity, we are opening doors for
their future. We find the children are eager to learn and eager to
share what they are learning. Perhaps some of you can take this
opportunity to brush up on your Spanish and some of you can begin
learning Spanish with your child. Our class time is limited and we
hope that this site will encourage you to reinforce at home the
Spanish your child is learning at school.
Why Volunteer?
Teaching Spanish is
extremely rewarding and an opportunity to make a direct and lasting
impact on the children's lives. It is a great way to brush up on and
expand your Spanish skills, and gives you the opportunity to be in
your child's classroom on a weekly basis. The children will love you
being there and will keep asking you to come back.
Our ability to continue
offering this program each year depends on our volunteer teachers
and assistants. We are always in need of enthusiastic volunteers who
are fluent or have good pronunciation skills and a basic command of
the language. Teaching experience is not necessary. We provide
training and all of the materials. If you are not fluent, but are
interested in volunteering, we also need volunteers who can assist
in the classes, help with administrative matters or work on our new
website. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us at
spanish@lakepointepto.org.
